NIDO Living Presents:

Land + Earth

Curated by Alexandra Ray

Featuring artists from the Bay area and Los Angeles, we investigate a sense of curiosity in differing perspectives on land and elemental aspects of living on this tremendous planet. In Amir Zaki’s photographs we zoom into observations in the natural world and then zoom out to gain an aerial perspective from above as in the case of photographer, Jock McDonald’s airport and spaghetti junction perspectives. A sense of pure emotion and almost spiritual harmonics are present in the geological paintings of Paul Seftel, using raw minerals and pigments in his work,  and also in the abstract studies of clouds in Dan Warth’s canvases. From urban sprawls to the elemental and remote, we see how man has inhabited space on earth and in the air.  In Valerie Thompson’s evocative photographs set in Joshua Tree, the land becomes a playground of illusion that we project onto. … as if nature isn’t enough---- isn’t that how man has used the Earth since the beginning of time?

OPENING RECEPTION
Thursday, November 19th, 2015
5:00-8:00 P.M.

R.S.V.P. to daniel@nidosf.com

Entitled: “Overture” the meaning of which is prelude, introduction to something big, this show aims to serve as an opener to a new relationship with its viewers.

As winter draws close this collective of paintings and sculptures focuses on extracting moods from its materials --moods are suggested, as in the layering of color, monochromatic tones and bold strokes of Gabriela Aguirre’s paintings. Based in Mexico City, this heralds Aguirre’s first West Coast show.  Light is delicately and masterfully manipulated to dance on water in Robin Deneven’s paintings on steel.. As light is caught disappearing on the horizon lines of these autumnal landscapes it is blatantly allowed to appear in the spacious abstractions of Melodie Davis, where areas of raw cream canvas are left exposed and light becomes a color-- a color of materiality. Randy Colosky, currently undertaking the Artist in Residence Program at Facebook in the Bay Area, shows numerous glass sculptures in his Factura Tektronika Series, bending the light into small playful cast glass table forms. These grew originally out of a series of bronze maquettes toying with parts that make up channels and sprues that permit molten metal to pass through them. In this case chanelled molds are made to melt crystalline colors and create ice forms that perhaps Uri Geller could have bent.

Featured Artists: Gabriele Aguirre, Randy Colosky, Melodie Davis, and Robin Deneven.

April 25th - May 25th, 2015

Tickets: www.decoratorshowcase.org

Opening Night Gala: Friday, April 24th

Room: 7 Enclosed Courtyard - An Ode to Innocence

Alexandra Ray, of Five Senses Art Consultancy is proud to participate in an outdoor space this year, showing the concept of using photography in a garden space.

A photograph of Antonio Canova's Neo-classical sculpture of Psyche and Cupid has center stage in this charming courtyard setting. The idea of using black and white photography outdoors is perhaps a little unexpected. A single timeless image in a weatherproofed light-box structure that also acts as a light source at night is on display. The pristine surface of Canova's marble figures appear so real in the photograph that it entices the viewer to bask in the intimacy. Here Psyche touches the wings of a butterfly, which symbolizes her offering her soul to Cupid, and is a true testament to young love.

Frank Eddy of Neo-American Gardens, has insured that the mood of the planting is contemporary and clean, echoing the simplicity of the image itself. The colors of the garden are fresh greens with accents of white. The floating white peonies in a shallow pool lend a hint of unapologetic romance.

DZINE Presents: "Jonathan Smith"

Curated by Alexandra Ray

EXHIBITION
Feb 27 - August 28th

DZINE
128 Utah Street
San Francisco, CA 94103

Alexandra Ray is honored to present photographer Jonathan Smith's work at the debut art show at DZINE, a 15,000 square foot showroom located in San Francisco's Design District. Primarily a showroom carrying high-end contemporary furniture, DZINE will be launching its integrated furniture /art space, featuring a melee of contemporary photography selected by Bay Area curators Alexandra Ray and Miriam Dym in collaboration with the showroom's creative director, Austin Forbord. DZINE's minimalistic concrete floors and soaring white walls lend themselves perfectly to a gallery space, highlighting the captivating nature of Smith's large-scale photographs.

Smith's work is an ongoing investigation into the transformative quality of shifting landscapes. Fascinated by the physical manifestation of the edges of environmental change, Smith often explores horizon lines where sea meets land or day meets night. The artist utilizes the limitations of a large format camera to create his images - a slow shutter speed and an unwieldy machine mean every photograph is highly detailed and extremely deliberate, truly immersing Smith in the scene around him. For the viewer, the large-scale final product is a powerful one, allowing them to virtually walk into an image and submerge with nature in a private and sensual way. Whether a photograph of the Northern Californian coastline in his series East/West, or the icy waters of Iceland in Streams, Smith's work is breathtaking in its ability to simultaneously capture nature's silent majesty and unstoppable force.

The "Electric Paintings" of Clive McCarthy

October 23rd, 2014
Starts 6.30 - 9.30

An evening salon

Fourteenth St Studios
270 14th St
San Francisco, CA 94103

Clive McCarthy's work is a fine example of technology meets art. If this is the road we are inevitably going down then you will enjoy McCarthy's sublime computer generated image paintings of McCarthy.

He custom builds computer systems to generate images, producing sensual, painterly paintings on flat LCD screens that morph endlessly that can be hung in large or small in spaces.

Each work has up to a thousand photographic based images that McCarthy has taken himself. He then writes the code to "paint" them into a random sequence that continues indefinitely. So, for those who tire easily of art that they buy this opens up the possibility of literally watching a million different images slowly present themselves and then fade into another equally sumptuous sequence. They are one of a kind pieces, installed onto a wall and turned on simply by a switch. McCarthy can use screens as large as 75" x 45" and the work automatically configures itself for the display they are connected to, making it easy to move a work from one screen size to another. They sit as comfortably as any pedestrian home entertainment system in an interior and yet they light up the room with a seductive living painting. Unlike a video installation work that must loop around after 10-15 minutes, McCarthy's paintings bleed into slow moving sensual pleasure domes, revealing every brushstroke that goes into the satisfying process of painting a picture.

Opening Night Gala: April 25th

Featuring works by: Martin Bialas

Alexandra Ray is proud to present the work of Martin Bialas in this year's elegant Pacific Heights house. Here we shall debut one of Bialas's largest bronze sculpture installations on the second floor.

His often ephemeral work is drawn from serendipitous findings and musings based on his experiences traveling in the vast Sahara desert, where Bialas has spent twenty years photographing, sculpting and drawing. This installation is a playful explosion of letters, words and early symbols--the roots of all communication-- It is as if our brains have decided to implode and its result is pure poetry. Bialas has a knack for transcending the most primitive and simple of ideas and materials for our awareness, in the most sophisticated way.

Please let us know if you would like to join us for the opening night gala.
Gala Tickets: $125

Showcase Admission tickets: $35

Pete Stern is a multi media artist who during the creation of his Color Beyond painting series, mixed and sampled video and fine art, between digital and screen printing and by doing so, Pete has created his own after hours painting by numbers technique. Capturing single frame video images whilst working within broadcast television on sitcoms and genre films, he transformed them into beautiful abstract expressionist digital paintings that went beyond what the surface video ever could. As Pete himself said, "I found video images on television at times to be so boring, so mundane, that I decided to explore deeper, behind and within the video image and into the very medium itself, wondering whether there must be more to this video medium than meets the eye." Working from the surface video images, Pete has created a rich, colorful, digital abstract expressionism for the 21st century and in doing so, he has taken the detritus of the modern cutting room floor, the proverbial digital waste basket, recycled and transformed the rescued binary junk, to produce the sublime images of Color Beyond.
